Settled in 1871, Mayfield's early settlers included families such as the Andersons, Petersons, Petersens, Bartholomews, Jensens, Sorensens, and Willdens. The area was considered sacred by Indigenous peoples, who referred to it as a "healing ground," and it is noted that no conflicts occurred during its settlement. Mayfield was incorporated as a town in 1909.
